High-phosphate food and drink
The following foods and drinks contain high levels of phosphate:
- Biscuits: cheese-filled biscuits, oatcakes, rye crisp breads, cereal bars, etc.
- Cakes: especially cakes containing nuts, marzipan, chocolate and cakes containing baking powder.
- Cereals: all Bran, Bran buds, muesli, all cereals containing nuts.
- Confectionery: fudge, sweets, chocolate.
- Dairy products: evaporated and condensed milk, hard cheeses such as cheddar, soft cheeses such as brie and cheese spread, custard, ice cream, milk puddings, yogurt. Milk and cheese (hard, soft, and processed cheeses) may be restricted. Your dietitian will advise you of safe quantities.
- Drinks: chocolate-flavored and malted milk drinks.
- Fish: herrings, kippers, mackerel, pilchards, sardines, whitebait, prawns, scallops, fish paste, taramasalata, etc.
- Meat: pâtè, offal, veal, pigeon, game, etc.
- Nuts and seeds: all types, such as peanuts and cashews; shop-bought marzipan.
- Miscellaneous: eggs, Gram flour, baking powder, yeast and beef extracts, soy and soy products.
